On August 7, 2024, the South Jersey Radio Association (SJRA) hosted a hands-on workshop at the Gibson House, where 10 enthusiastic members gathered to build VHF antennas using everyday materials. The event, which ran from 7:30 to 9:00 PM, was a resounding success, demonstrating both the creativity and technical skills of the participants.
The evening began with members assembling their VHF antenna kits. The components were provided by several club members: Jim Haney, KD2OIL, supplied precut sections of metal tape measure; Brian Gross, KD2FJX, brought the precut ½-inch PVC pipe sections, and Rick Lawn, W2JAZ, provided essential fittings and hardware. Ken Botterbrodt, K2WB, played a crucial role by providing electrical power support and bringing along a VHF-capable radio for testing.
Participants eagerly got to work, soldering wires and using hose clamps to assemble their antennas. The process involved careful attention to detail and some hands-on problem solving, reflecting the club’s commitment to practical learning.
Once the antennas were assembled, each one was tested for standing wave ratio (SWR) match to the VHF band. This critical step ensured that the antennas were functioning efficiently and ready for use. Many operators were thrilled to find that their newly built antennas allowed them to make numerous contacts with regional repeaters, showcasing their effectiveness.
