Even as everyone eagerly awaits the big CQ World Wide SSB contest, there are plenty of contests and events coming up worth some of your time. This weekend, you can take part in the newish Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) World Wide RTTY contest. Starting this year, JARL is taking over the administration of what was formerly the Japanese Amateur Radio Teleprinter Society World Wide RTTY contest. Just like other JARL events, the exchange for this one is RST report and age. Also this weekend is the Fall Stew Perry Topband Challenge, and the Illinois and New York QSO Parties. The countdown begins — we are just about a week out from CQ World Wide SSB, which will bring the bands alive for the 48-hour event. Tens of thousands of stations will be on the air from all over the world! The exchange is signal report and CQ zone, so it’s an easy first contest, and allows for some seriously high rates on phone! |

Hank, W6SX, asked why there was the same list of contests twice in the last issue. This was my mistake! For reference, part of the contest update is a contest summary, which simply lists upcoming events, and a contest listing, which goes into a bit more detail. Last issue had the summary twice. |

See the "Contests" section below for complete contest information.
Note: Contest dates and times are in UTC. This means that a contest that is listed to start on a Saturday at 0000z, for example, really starts on a Friday night in US time zones. |

| | | | From Doug Grant, K1DG, President of the WRTC 2014 Board of Directors: Recent incidents in WRTC events have prompted the WRTC2014 Board of Directors to review the results of that event.
The Board has concluded its review of the event and this is the result.
There was no evidence of frequency-holding, pirate or fraudulent multipliers, or excessive “cheerleading.”
Statement on the third-place finish at WRTC 2014:
The WRTC2014 Board of Directors has reviewed the finish for third place at that event. The scores of the two teams concerned were separated by 0.13 percent. During adjudication in 2014 the two teams exchanged third and fourth place repeatedly as the log checking progressed, and the closeness of the finish was recognized at the time. As part of this review the Board re-checked the two logs against the full set of logs received for the 2014 IARU HF Championship, many of which were not available during the judging period. That re-check left the two teams closer still, less than one hundredth of one percent apart. The Board is satisfied that the difference between them was below the resolution of the log-checking process, and that no adjudication could have separated them reliably. The rules of WRTC 2014 define the Champion and are silent on the order of finish below it, so nothing in the rules stands in the way of recording a draw.
Both teams were consulted and have agreed to share third place. The board therefore records the finish for third place at WRTC 2014 as a draw between W1P, operated by DJ5MW and DL1IAO, and W1Z, operated by N5DX and N2IC, and both teams are shown in third place in the results. No published score is altered. This takes nothing away from either team, or from any other competitor. No rule set at any WRTC has addressed how such a close finish should be recorded, and the Board will ask the Sanctioning Committee to consider whether future rules should.
On behalf of the WRTC2014 Board of Directors
Doug K1DG WRTC2014 Chairman |

Practice your typing This may sound odd, but being a good typist will help improve your accuracy in contesting. Being able to type fast helps with high rate runs, and being able to type without looking down at the keyboard lets you shift your focus away from typing and onto maximizing your time on the radio. |

Jochen Hammes has built on some existing work to make a successful 13-centimeter transmitter from an ESP32 microcontroller. It is highly experimental, transmits at extremely low power, but does appear to work with narrowband modes like SSB and RTTY. ESP32 microcontrollers are very cheap, pricing in around $5, so this is definitely a cheap way to explore the 13-centimeter band, even if you can only work from one end of your house to the other. |

Safety FirstIf you’re on the CQ Contest or YCCC reflectors, you likely saw Paul Young’s message about an incident affecting his wife at a recent tower climb. They were very lucky and Charlotte suffered no major injury, mostly thanks to wearing a helmet. It serves as a great reminder to tread cautiously when working on or around towers. I can think of so many hams whose story ends with “died doing what he loved” meaning they died falling off a tower. There are things you must do to ensure the safety of everyone during tower work. Jim, K1IR, has a good presentation on the topic he’s done a few times, linked here. OSHA and the FCC have also released a communication tower best practices guide, which is a great read. Most importantly, never do any work that makes you uncomfortable. Schedule a tower climb, but wake up feeling off that day? Cancel it. Get up 90 feet of a 120-foot tower and it looks unsafe? Stop the climb. And, for when accidents do happen, always wear proper personal protective equipment; it will literally save the lives of you and others. No antenna work or tower climb is worth your life.
