MOTIVATED BY HIS LOVE OF TEACHING AND HAM RADIO, MARSHALL WAS AMONG THE
FIRST TO VOLUNTEER AS ONE OF ABOUT A DOZEN ARRL CODE PRACTICE STATIONS.
EACH WINTER, FROM 1929 TO 1940, MARSHALL TRANSMITTED NEARLY 70 LESSONS TO

HAMS LOCATED ACROSS THE COUNTRY.  HOUR LONG SESSIONS BEGAN AT ABOUT 700 PM
AND OCCURRED NIGHTLY ON THE 160 METER BAND.  MARSHALL CHOSE WINTER FOR HIS
LESSONS BECAUSE PROPAGATION WAS FAVORABLE.  ACCORDING TO EIGHT YEARS BEFORE
THE MIKE BY DON MIX, W1TC SK, IN THE FEBRUARY 1939 ISSUE OF QST, MARSHALLS
LESSONS INCLUDED A REVIEW OF THE MORSE CODE ALPHABET, NUMERALS, AND
PUNCTUATION MARKS SENDING COPY FROM THE RADIO AMATEURS HANDBOOK AND THE
