The Grande Ronde Radio Amateurs (W7GRA) is an amateur radio club based in Eastern Oregon, primarily serving Union and Wallowa Counties, though it welcomes all individuals interested in the hobby of ham radio. Operating under the FCC-assigned call sign W7GRA, the club is dedicated to sharing the enjoyment and practical applications of amateur radio while fostering a community of enthusiasts. The Grande Ronde Radio Amateur Association (GRRAA) focuses on promoting personal enjoyment, technical skill development, and emergency communication preparedness within the region.
W7GRA encourages participation through a variety of activities, including monthly meetings, social gatherings, and hands-on events like the ARRL Field Day. The club meets informally every second Saturday of the month at 9:00 AM at The Smokehouse Restaurant in La Grande for a no-host breakfast, providing an opportunity for members to connect. Additionally, official business meetings occur on the fourth Tuesday of each month, offering a platform to discuss club operations and plan future activities. For those new to the hobby, W7GRA provides resources and support for obtaining an FCC amateur radio license, including study materials and proctored testing sessions.
The club is deeply committed to community service, particularly in preparing for emergency communications needs. Members actively participate in local ham radio nets, such as the W7GRA repeater net on 146.980 MHz, and collaborate with organizations like NOAA and the Oregon Emergency Net to relay critical weather data. With a strong emphasis on inclusivity, W7GRA invites both licensed operators and newcomers to join, explore the hobby, and engage over the airwaves. More information about membership, events, and resources can be found on their website, w7gra.org, or by connecting with them on Facebook.
