Born in the aftermath of World War II, the San Diego DX Club traces its origins to 1946, when returning hams—eager to reconnect with the world—founded what would become one of the nation’s most respected DX organizations. The club’s formal charter followed in 1949, and by the 1950s the SDDXC managed the W6 QSL Bureau and established a membership ladder list that continues to this day. The club became an ARRL-affiliated organization on September 28, 1959.
Today, the SDDXC stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation. We are a multi-generational community where old-timers—many at the very top of the DXCC Honor Roll—share a lifetime of experience with newer DXers eager to make their mark. Together, we blend the heritage of CW and SSB DXing with the excitement and efficiency of modern digital modes such as FT8, representing the leading edge of amateur radio technology. Our monthly meetings feature presentations from world-class DXers and technical experts, while our members consistently excel in major contests and DXpeditions.
Our first-class monthly Club Bulletin has been published for decades and in recent years is being distributed by Email and via our web site. Our current editor, Bob Farkaly K9RHV, brings with him a wealth of DXing experience. As a life-long ham and DXer with 66 years on the bands, he’s reached every goal he set for himself. He’s worked them all—save for P5 on CW—and he’s held a place at the Top of the Honor Roll since 1992. DXing and the pursuit of the Honor Roll have been among the great joys of his life, and they continue to fuel his passion for writing and sharing the stories behind the QSOs.
The Bulletin’s monthly columns include “From the Prez”, Board and Meeting Minutes, Treasurer’s Report, Contest Reports, “From the Editor”, information about upcoming meetings, DX reports and sponsor recognition.
By far, the most popular column is “From the Editor”, where Bob draws from his own personal recollections and experiences, guided by a simple purpose: to keep the flame of DXing burning brightly. Each month, he works to make those memories meaningful to both his own generation of DXers while also inspiring the next to make DXing part of their own aspirations. He tries to blend the excitement of the chase with the color and texture of the exotic places behind the callsigns. Every story comes from the paths he’s traveled, the people he’s met, and the radio moments that shaped him. His goal is always the same—to keep DXing alive, relevant, and compelling for my fellow Club members.
Whether you’re chasing your first DXCC country or adding to your Honor Roll standing, the San Diego DX Club and its Monthly Bulletin bridges generations, preserves the art of DXing, and propels it confidently into the digital age. http://www.sddxc.org
