Students will learn basic regulations, operating practices, and electronics theory, with a focus on VHF and UHF applications. Upon passing the Technician Class license, the student will have all HAM radio privileges above 30 MHz. The student will be prepared to sit and take the formal exam to pass the FCC Element 2 license commonly known as the HAM Technician license. Morse code is not required for this license.
In addition to the curriculum to prepare for the technician licensing exam students will also receive a significant amount of classroom instruction on additional HAM radio topics a newly licensed operator will need to get on the air including how to select a first radio, how to enter a net, and numerous other topics not directly part of the licensing exam but topics every new HAM needs to know.
The course uses the Gordon West technician study guide which is sourced from ARRL and offered to students the first night of class, while not mandatory it is highly encouraged students use the study guide to augment their classroom studies.
Possession of a HAM radio is not required for the class.
