  • 11/01/2025 | The Potomac Highlands Flood of 1985: 40th Anniversary

Nov 1, 0900Z-1700Z, K8APD, . Potomac Headwaters Amateur Radio Association. 7.270 14.270. Certificate & QSL. Mike Turner, 7393 Sugar Grove Rd, Sugar Grove, WV 26815. On election day in November of 1985, after a week of rainy weather in the area, Hurricane Juan made its way through the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia and Virginia, devastating the area with massive flooding. Roads, electricity, and telephones were wiped out, cutting the area off from the outside world. Amateur Radio Operators went into action and provided vital communications in and out of the area. Hams operated on emergency power day and night to pass welfare messages, request equipment and supplies, and coordinate relief efforts. This year will mark the 40th anniversary of this deadly flood. Potomac Highlands Amateur Radio Association will operate a special event station from the Franklin, WV Fireman Carnival Grounds on November 1st from 9 am to 5 pm using the club callsign, K8APD, which previously belonged to Doug Brown, one of the men who operated day and night during the flood. QSL Note: We are a small club with limited resources. We would prefer to send QSL's and Certificated via PDF through email.
