30 meters QRN; 20, 40 quiet?

I'm less than a year with my license so excuse my elementary question. Today (Feb 21 2012) is the first time I've gotten on 30 and had my meter read S8 just receiving. I moved to 20; S2; 40; S1 to 0. What atmospheric influences would cause such an anomaly? 30 stayed virtually unusable all day due to the high noise level. Oddly enough, I made my first exotic DX contact on 40 MHz and 100 watts. Anyone know if these two things are connected? |

Good question. I have seen the same thing, on and off, for the last few weeks. The 30-meter band is virtually unusable for working weak stations with a noise level of S-8 or more, while 40-meters and 20-meters have noise levels of S-1 or 2. If the noise rolls off dramatically with frequency, one possibility might be a local RFI source. Walking around your neighborhood with a battery powered shortwave receiver might verify this possibility. Antenna resonances can also cause noise to peak at some frequencies. |
