QST Columnist Recognized for Documenting Radio’s Past
John Dilks, K2TQN -- who pens the “Vintage Radio” column in QST every month -- was awarded the AWA Houck Award for Documentation by the Antique Wireless Association (AWA) at their 2010 World Convention, held August 17-21 in Rochester, New York. This award is presented each year to an AWA member who has written original articles on radio development or history in the AWA Journal, AWA Review or other publication.
Dilks began writing the “Old Radio” column in January 2000 (now called “Vintage Radio”). The AWA honored him with the award, noting that these monthly columns represent “a remarkable range of topics (radio stations, Amateur Radio equipment, early radio operators, radio-using expeditions, etc.) and are based on great original research resources.”
“John’s monthly ‘Vintage Radio’ column is one of the stars of QST magazine,” said QST Editor Steve Ford, WB8IMY. “I have no idea how he keeps coming up with so much interesting, well-written historical material, but I’m glad he does.”
In 2002, Dilks received the AWA’s Houck Award for Preservation. The AWA recognizes one individual per year with this award that goes to an AWA member who, through personal accomplishment, has acquired and preserved by documenting an outstanding collection of radio artifacts. Dilks received this award based on his high-quality vintage radio collection and his outreach efforts to display it via the Mobile Museum at hamfests and other events. He is the only individual in the 38 year history of the AWA awards to capture both the Houck Award for Documentation and the Houck Award for Preservation.
