EC-001 Instruction: Lloyd Jeffries K1LGJ

k1lgi.jpgLloyd Jeffries, K1LGJ, of South Texas Section has developed PowerPoint instructional aids for the Introduction to Emergency Communication (EC-001). He has shared these materials for others to use as a foundation for instruction.

This Williamson County, TX ARES/RACES member is currently teaching this class at monthly sessions to everyone concerned with emergency communication (not just amateurs). The 29 topics are arranged in 6 sessions with room in the 6th session for the final assessment exam.

The format that Lloyd uses is 6 nightly meetings of four hours over a three week period (24 hours). He alters the evenings to accommodate people’s schedules. Flexibility is the key to attendance. If a student misses more than one session, he asks them to attend the missed sessions in the next class offering before taking the exam. Lloyd says “learning the content is more important than passing the exam”.

Many students do not buy manuals so Lloyd gives a hard copy of exam questions for each session (single handout) so the student can write down notes and mark the correct answer while in class.

There is much discussion to prevent PowerPoint overload and the exercises are covered as a group. The focus is local issues applicable to the needs of the community. Every question and answer is covered.

A local Certificate of Completion is issued to everyone who completes the course measured by attendance and participation. ARRL issues the Course Certificate after the final exam is successfully passed.
